GUIDELINES FOR MENTORING RELATIONSHIPS.
WHEN YOU FIND SOMEONE WHO CAN PERSONALLY MENTOR YOU, USE THESE GUIDELINES TO HELP DEVELOP A POSITIVE MENTORING RELATIONSHIP WITH THAT PERSON.
ASK THE RIGHT QUESTION – Give thought to questions you will ask before you meet with your mentor. Make them strategic for your own growth.
CLARIFY YOUR LEVEL OF EXPECTATIONS – Generally, the goal of mentoring is improvement, not perfection. Perhaps only a few people can be truly excellent – but all of us can become better.
ACCEPT A SUBORDINATE,LEARNING POSITION – Don’t let ego get in the way of learning. Trying to impress the mentor with your knowledge or ability will set up a mental barrier between you. It will prevent you from receiving what they are giving.
RESPECT THE MENTOR BUT DON’T IDOLIZE HIM – Respect allows us to accept what the mentor is teaching. But making the mentor an idol removes the ability to be objective and critical -faculties we need for adapting a mentor’s knowledge and experiences to ourselves.
IMMEDIATELY PUT INTO EFFECT WHAT YOU ARE LEARNING – In the best mentoring relationships, what is learned comes quickly into focus. Learn, practice and assimilate.
BE DISCIPLINED IN RELATING TO THE MENTOR – Arrange for ample and consistent time, select the subject matter in advance and do your homework to make the session profitable.
REWARD YOU MENTOR WITH YOUR OWN PROGRESS – If you show appreciation but make no progress, the mentor experiences failure. Your progress is his or hers highest reward. Strive for growth, then communicate your progress.
DON’T THREATEN TO GIVE UP – Let your mentor know you have made a decision for progress and that you are a persistent person – a determined winner. Then they will know that they are not wasting their time.
There is no substitute for your own personal growth. If you are not receiving and growing, you will not be able to give to the people you nurture and develop.
The following has been taken from “Developing The Leaders Around You” by John C. Maxwell.
TEN PRICIPLES FOR GETTING ALONG WITH DIFFICULT PEOPLE.
- MAINTAIN – Your confidence by being in right relationship with God. You can’t be objective or discerning if you’re not in good standing with God. A strong relationship with God gives you the grace and confidence to deal properly with difficult people.
- REMEMBER – Over-reacting will accentuate the conflict and confuse the issue. Expecting him to do or to be something that is impossible.
- QUIT – Trying to change the difficult person. Give up your rights and expectations regarding this person. Accept the fact that you can’t change him, but you can change your reactions to him.
- REFUSE – To play their games. They may attempt use you or make you feel guilty or obligated. Recognize the emotional games. And do not participate.
- DON”T – Allow yourself to become the difficult person’s slave. Be honest with yourself and learn to say no.
- KEEP – A proper spirit and attitude. Maintaining credibility is the greatest struggle. Don’t let bitterness, anger or resentment grow.
- ALLOW – God to lead you in dealing with the difficult person. There are no easy answers or set patterns to dealing with them. The Holy Spirit will give guidance.
- CONFRONT – Immediately. Do not put off facing the conflict. It only makes matters worse.
- Demonstrate – Godly compassion. The basis for getting along with people is found in Jesus’ words. A religious leader asked Jesus what was the greatest commandment in the law. Jesus responded, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul, and with all your mind”. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: “Love your neighbor as yourself”. All the law and the prophets hang on these two commandments.(Mt.22:23-40,NIV)
It is easy to love those who love us and those who are easy to get along with. But how do you treat the stranger, the difficult person, the person you really do not understand, can’t relate to and don’t really care about?
JESUS SAID THAT IT IS THE TRUE TEST OF OUR CHARACTER AND LOVE.
What If Everyone Tithed?
WHAT ARE THE POSSIBILITIES IF EVERY CHRISTIAN IN AMERICA TITHED TEN PERCENT OF THEIR INCOME?
We can imagine those possibilities through a recent CNN article about tithing.
The churches of the US last year received about $4 billion in donations. If the 112 million Americans who claim a religious affiliation had given one tenth — the traditional tithe — of their personal income to the churches, that total could have topped $25 billion.
It takes money to advance the kingdom of God in this world, yet, according to this article, the average Christian in America gives only $35.71 dollars to God’s work each year. And we wonder why America is straying so far from God.
Jesus said in Matthew 6:21 (KJV) “For where your treasure is there will your heart be also.” Notice this verse reads the opposite of the way we think. We think that wherever our heart is, our treasure will be also, or whatever our passion is that is what we will support.
That is not what Jesus said and His ways are far above our ways. ”For where your treasure is there your heart will be also.” Our heart will follow our treasure, what a revelation.
This is what commitment is all about: if we are committed to something, we do it whether or not our heart is in it. Many times we give ourselves to a cause without feeling a love for it. But the more we invest ourselves into that cause, the more our hearts are drawn into it.
If we begin to invest ourselves into the things of God, eventually our heart will follow. This is what Jesus taught us!
Unfortunately America’s treasure is not where it ought to be; consequently neither is Americas heart. But if we, as Christians, could take hold of the principles of tithing by faith as Abraham did, we would change our nation.
Luke 6:38 (KJV): ”Give and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again.”
Jesus said that we will receive in abundance if we will give in abundance. It is obvious in this context of writing that Jesus is talking about more then just money; He is also talking about our love for one another. A giving spirit should begin at the core of everything that we do.
Give of your love, your talent, your time, and your finances.
Jesus is not telling us to give to expect something in return, rather to give from a heart of love for him in obedience to His word.
The Lord addressed the topic of giving in relationship to how we should treat our enemies saying:Luke 6:33 KJV – And if ye do good to them which do good to you, what thank have ye? For sinners also do the same.
And if you lend to them of whom you hope to receive, what thank have ye? For sinners also lend to sinners,to receive much again.
But love your enemies and do good and lend hoping for nothing again;and your reward shall be great, and ye shall be the children of the Highest. For he is kind to the unthankful and to the evil.Be ye therefore merciful as your father is merciful.Judge not and ye shall not be judged Condemn not and ye shall not be condemned.Forgive and ye shall be forgiven, love your enemies and when you lend money hope for nothing in return and your reward shall be great. Show mercy and ye shall receive mercy.
Judge not and ye shall not be judged. Forgive and ye shall be forgiven. Lend money and hope for nothing in return.JESUS UNDERSCORED THE SPIRIT BEHIND OUR GIVING AS WELL.
When we tithe, do we expect something back from God? If so,we are not giving cheerfully, with the right spirit. We should always seek the giver and not the gift. But when we truly give to God, or anybody else for that matter, with a true spirit of giving it will return in a much greater measure then it was given.
Some Christians tithe simply to receive a blessing, others withhold their tithe out of fear or a lack of faith that God will not bless them with more. Then there are the faithful few who simply obey God and give back what already belongs to him.
CONSIDER THE PREDICAMENT IN WHICH A MAN,LOST IN THE DESERT ,FOUND HIMSELF.
He went days without water and was about to die from dehydration. Suddenly he saw an oasis. In it he found a water pump and a pail of water along side. A sign on the pump said “USE THE WATER IN THE PAIL TO PRIME THE PUMP.” Our friend faced the dilemma of immediately drinking the water in the pail or using the water to prime the pump and receive an abundance of the precious liquid.
What would you do in that situation? Would you obey and prime the pump, or immediately consume the much needed water?
When we give with an obedient attitude, we can expect more then just a cup of water. WE CAN EXPECT AN UNLIMITED SUPPLY THAT LASTS.

HAVE YOU BEEN CALLED TO PREACH?
The question here to day is: How does one truly know beyond doubt that they have been called to preach?
First we have to know and understand that only God can call you to the ministry. While others pursue the ministry because of parental influence or, to quote a phrase, they are “mama called and papa sent.” Consequently it is paramount to know that God has called you, not others. If God has not called you and you try to force the ministry to work, you will be miserable the rest of your life. That is not what God intends for you. God is not the author of confusion (1 Cor. 14:33). In fact the Bible says (in Psalm 37:23) “The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord: and he delighteth in his way.” The Lord will lead you where He wants you to go and, as the familiar phrase states, “The will of the Lord will never lead you where His grace cannot keep you.”
When God fills us with the Holy Spirit (Holy Ghost), we are called to do something for Him. “But ye shall receive power after the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me in both Jerusalem, and in all Judea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost parts of the earth.” (Acts1:8).
However, that doesn’t necessarily mean that God called us to preach. Often,we misinterpret what God wants us to do because we think “called by God” means he called us into the pulpit ministry. That’s not always the case.
Our areas of service to God vary and are limitless. Some are called to hold street meetings; some are called to teach Sunday School or Bible studies, while others are called to foreign mission fields or to simply pray for Missionaries and Pastors. Every Ministry, whatever God places on your heart, is valuable to God.
A preacher alone cannot win the lost; he must surround himself with people who desire to do the work of the ministry.
The Bible tells us that we are all different parts that make up one body. “For we as many members of one body, and all members have not the same office” (Rom.12:4). We all must work together. Don’t allow yourself to envy someone else’s calling. Your calling is just as important to God as any other.
SO HOW CAN YOU KNOW GOD HAS CALLED YOU TO THE MINISTRY?
- YOU WILL HEAR FROM GOD – Jesus said; “my sheep hear my voice, and I know them and they follow me.” (JN.10:27). To be called by God is to” hear ” from God. We must ask ourselves: Have I put myself in a position to hear from God ? In other words is your prayer life consistent? Do you fast often? The multiple distractions from daily life can prevent us from hearing from God. Prayer and fasting cleanses our bodies and minds to be more sensitive to the voice of the Lord. God calls different people in different ways. Some people hear the audible voice of God while others (A greater majority) sense a strong impression by the spirit. Either way it is an undeniable calling. Something inside burns with truth as God speaks to our hearts, (Luke 24:32). We desire to spend all of our time studying the word of God and nothing else satisfies. We experience what the prophet Jeremiah said, “His word was in my heart as a burning fire shut up in my bones.” (Jer. 20:9).
- YOU WILL DEVELOP A BURDEN FOR THE LOST – Those called to the ministry will have an enormous burden for the lost and dying in this world. Your heart will break for those without God and your desire to reach them will, at times, overwhelm you. Teaching Bible studies or knocking on doors will rank high on your priority list. On the other hand if the thought of sinners going to hell where there is wailing and gnashing of teeth (Matt. 13:42) doesn’t bother you, this is a good sign that you have not been called. Through out scripture, whenever Jesus ministered, His thought and main focus was to seek and save that which was lost. (Luke 19:10 ).
- YOU WILL STRIVE TO BE MORE LIKE HIM – To be called by God is to be more like Him. The disciples who followed Jesus left what ever they were doing to follow and do what Jesus was doing. We have to separate ourselves from friends and even from family members. It means we will no longer go to certian places or do certain things because of our intense desire to be more like Jesus. We are always conscious of changing from “Glory to Glory.” We strive to lead a life pleasing to God.
Finally be careful of what you pray for because “He came unto his own who received him not.” To follow your calling is often lonely because: ” To lead the orchestra you will have to turn your back on the crowd.” (Prov.3:5-6).
HW. Question: Tell me in at least a two paragraph answer, how God called you and when he called you. What are you doing to prepare for the particular call that is on your life?
LESSONS TO LEARN WHILE PREPARING FOR MINISTRY.
- BEFORE YOU CAN LEAD YOU WILL HAVE TO FOLLOW — Too often when a person gets a touch or call form God they feel that it is time to set out for ministry. As we are learning in the life of King David, that is not the way to do things. There are life lessons that one will have to learn while hanging out in Bethlehem (the local church) before they can reign in Zion, (the world).
- BE THE REAL YOU, IF YOU KNOW WHO THE REAL YOU IS — David soon learned that it is lonely at the top, so you’d better know why you are there. And what your purpose for being there is.
- LIVE WHAT YOU TEACH,PRACTICE WHAT YOU PREACH AND BE WILLING TO BE VULNERABLE —Don’t be a know it all. There is always room for correction and teaching, stretching and flexing. Reach out to someone who is able to help push you along and learn what you can from them. Be an observer and learn what to and what not to do. Be able to take constructive criticism. Be teachable.
- DAVID UNDERSTOOD THE IMPORTANCE OF SPIRITUAL AUTHORITY — David realized if he was ever going to be a man of spiritual authority, then he would have to get under a man of spiritual authority. He chose to serve King Saul for a season, be his “Armor bearer” , his valet. King David was Saul’s “Armor bearer” and Elisha was Elijah’s “armor bearer,” just as Joshua was Moses’s “Armor bearer”. And as you know they all received a double portion of their leaders’ anointing.
- OUR TRIALS AND TESTINGS AND CIRCUMSTANCES DO NOT MAKE US WHO WE ARE, THEY REVEAL WHO WE REALLY ARE — Do not be afraid of trials and testings and circumstances; they are there to help you see just who God has made you to be. When hard times come, those times are there to challenge you and stretch you. You are already whom God says you are. All the life lessons that come our way will help us to mature and grow to become productive in the kingdom.
- BE SURE THAT YOU MEASURE SUCCESS PROPERLY — We sometimes measure success wrongly and therefore we do not see who we truly are and do not understand our potential in life. Success is measured by the respect and love of those closest to you. Your worth is not by what you get in life or gather to yourself, it is measured by how much you give away. Giving is the highest level of living.
- I AM AMAZED AT WHAT GOD HAS DONE INSIDE OF ME — And yet no one but God and myself see the work he has done on the inside. Likewise, you and God alone know what God has done on the inside of you. Remember what is on the inside is always more important and rich than what others see on the outside. Spurgeon said, “You are no more important to God in public as you are in private”. In time God will reveal his champions of the faith.
- THINK OF FAILURE AS A PART OF TRAINING — Failure is a friend who will teach you if you will let it. Because there is so much to be learned from it. For one thing it is almost always a springboard to success for those who will acccept the challenge that will come from pressing in and running toward the goal.
- CHALLENGING YOURSELF IS A GOOD IDEA AND A POSITIVE STEP TOWARD SUCCESS — Say to yourself: Am I going to get any better or is this it? Remember opportunities are seldom labeled and therefore look for the challenge in everything you do. Strive to do better, and rejoice at every little step you take forward.
- LOOK CAREFULLY AT THOSE YOU ARE ASSOCIATED WITH, THOSE YOU HANG AROUND WITH, YOUR ASSOCIATES — Often times this is a clear compass as to where you are headed. If the future doesn’t look bright change you direction and keep moving.
- EVERYTHING WORTH ANYTHING IN LIFE TAKES SACRIFICE — There will be no success without a sacrifice, without long hours of study and hard work, you will not be able to achieve your goals. Remember you can be it if you can see it.
HW. = In one paragraph tell me your plans to facilitate how you’re going to reach your goals.
“PUT IT IN WRITING”
THE WRITTEN WORD IS VERY POWERFUL AND PERSUASIVE.
A spoken word is quickly forgotten, but put the same words in writing and the phrase is instantly given new credence and respect. For that reason, putting it in writing is a wise practice. When everything is written out, you’re able to see clearly what needs to be accomplished, how it will be done, and what your responsibility is. By putting it in writing, you’re making a commitment.
PUTTING IT IN WRITING WILL ALSO MOTIVATE YOU.
It will keep you on track. By writing down your goals you make a commitment to them. Written goals urge us to action and determine direction.
DECIDE FOR YOURSELF WHAT YOUR GOALS ARE.
Decide when and how you wish to reach them. Then after you have written them down, keep them in a place that is in plain view throughout each day. As you accomplish each one, cross it off. As you do, allow yourself some personal gratification. There is therapy in seeing a long list of goals accomplished.
A THINGS TO DO LIST WILL EASE THE MENTAL STRESS OF THE DAY.
Often our minds are more on thinking what needs to be done rather then on what to do to get something done. It is easier to set a pace for the day when you have a written list. Plan your day by allowing yourself allotted amount of time for each item. Write that time next to each item. Don’t let other people or situations keep you from accomplishing each task.
BE SURE THAT YOUR LIST INCLUDES TIME FOR PRAYER AND MEDITATING ON GOD’S WORD.
Often the situations that we handle throughout the day are mishandled because our perspective is not correct. A mishandled situation can cause us to have to re-do a task or make an apology. Seeking God’s wisdom and help will ensure greater productivity.
HW: PUT ON YOUR FAVORITE MUSIC AND PRAISE THE LORD!
THE SECRET TO SUCCESS
There is much that I can say about success to you today. However I want to focus first and foremost on that which is profitable for you.
I believe that before one could be successful in the
natural ,you must first be successful in the realm of the Spirit. And I also believe that this totally depends on your walk with God and how you relate to him as God.
Let me ask you How is your walk with God? How is your
spirit -man being treated or how are you treating your spirit-man?
1) Are you praying constantly so that your spirit-man is being edified and nourished?
2) Are you practicing praise, the praise that builds a man , praise that glorifies the most high God will build and edify your spirit-man.
3) Are you allowing your spirit-man to enjoy time in God’s presence worshiping and glorifying God. As the scripture says when we see him we will be like him. Worshiping God allows you to draw closer to him and see him more clearly. More of him and less of you.
4) Are you giving time for your spirit-man to fellowship with God faithfully? To spend time in his presence alone with him.
Fellowship is what draws the distinction in your spirit-man . It matures us and brings us from sonship to kingship.
To cater to your spirit man is to give him attention. Our walk with God should be one filled with joy and not a chore or a ritual. Many christians who are saved and baptized in the Spirit are a disappointment to God because of the lifestyle they portray.
There have been so many Spirit-filled believers who have joined churches that deny the Holy Spirit’s moving and his gifts. They say,”We don’t do that here” They are nothing more then social clubs that cater to the flesh.
Which do you belong to ? A church or a social club. If the answer is a social club know this: It will kill your spirit-man and cause you to become lukewarm.
You will find that you’ve begun to be complacent and soon you will become thirsty and dry and miss God’s will for your life.
Ask yourself is this me? If so then come to the altar afresh and ask God to do a work of renewal in your life. And in your Spirit-man. Allow him to take charge of your life afresh and you will begin to experience the rivers of refreshing once again.
If you allow yourself to be changed afresh into his image you will once again be able to rule your life and follow after the things of God anew.
HW. In a paragraph ot two please tell us how you take care of your spirit-man and what are the tools you use to assure yourself that it is well with your soul and that your spirit-man is revived continually.
DECISION MAKING
MOST LEADERS MUST CONSTANTLY WORK AT MAKING DECISIONS SIMPLE.
The implication of a decision will always be complex enough ,and sometimes we try to solve or deal with all the implications- the how, who, why, how much and so on at the same time we make the decision.
WHAT ARE THE FIVE OR TEN MOST RELEVANT,PROVEN FACTS IN THIS SITUATION?
Right up front ,distinguish proven facts from what are simply your assumptions. Assumptions are what we believe to be true. They can be very faulty foundations on which to build your decision. A proven fact is “Last month the house down the street sold for X amount of dollars.”
An assumption would be”I think the houses in this neighborhood would sell for about X dollars.”
The most frequent violation of sound decision making is trying to decide before all the facts are known. Somehow
in our minds we have a need to decide now, a need to bring closure, a need to have things settled . Because an undecided situation often brings us stress, our minds compel us to make a decision too quickly before all the facts are in. “Once the facts are clear, the decisions jump out at you.” Find out the facts.
HOW WILL THIS DECISION IMPACT ALL THE PEOPLE WHO ARE THE MAIN PLAYERS? Who else will be affected? People in other departments? Your spouse and children?
WHAT WILL BE THE LONG-TERM IMPACT OF THIS DECISION?
What will be the long term impact of this decision?
How would this decision affect all people a year from now?
Five or ten years from now? By the time the children leave home? By the time I retire?
The more reversible the decision and it’s consequences the freer you are to move faster in making it.
WHAT LEGAL AND MORAL,OR ETHICAL CONCERNS ARE INVOLVED IN THE DECISION?
Be clear on the factors, especially if it’s a big decision involving major commitments of money, time, and energy , and affecting a number of lives.
Understand the difference between these three categories. Legality is based on a coded law. Morality is based on moral conduct or trust. Ethics are based on the excepted or cultural standard.
Sort out these terms and their application to your decision making process, since some decisions you make could be legal and yet immoral or ethical and yet illegal.
HAVE I WRITTEN DOWN THE BASIC ISSUES INVOLVED IN THIS DECISION ?
Simply getting everything on paper can be very helpful. The bigger the decision, the more helpful it is.
WHAT ARE THE TRENDS RELATED TO THIS DECISION?
A trend line is one way to help you establish a context for sound decision making. As trends change the context changes. Therefore ,the meaning of each fact you’re considering also changes.
What are the trends related to the major decision you’re making? Are prices going up or down? Is demand greater or less? Are complaints fewer or more frequent?
WHAT OTHER LINGERING QUESTIONS DO I HAVE?
Maybe you’ve been ignoring some of the questions or concerns in your mind. Bring them out into the open and be sure you deal with them before you make the decision.
H.W.QUESTION
A family moves in down the street and you wish to have them visit the church so you send them an invitation to come worship one Sunday with you.
They take you up on your invitation. While they are visiting the church you make an announcement that there is a class that is going to be given for six weeks in religious cultures and customs. They sign up for the class.
While attending the class you notice that they are causing much disruption by being argumentative with everything you teach. You do not wish to be rude but you have a few decisions to make. First you must decide what to do about the disruptive argumentative outbursts.
next you decide to keep cohesion with the class and it’s purpose. Finally you need to look for the best outcome and gear toward this. In one or two paragraphs tell me what you would do and what would be your decisions in this instance. Be sure to address the legal, moral, and ethical points in your answer. Thanks and have fun with this.
